Earth Day (April 2013 School Leader Update)

Earth Day is April 22 of each year. Earth Day is a wonderful annual event celebrated worldwide to increase awareness for our environment. School districts and nonpublic schools can incorporate Earth Day into their curriculum in a number of ways. One way a school can do this is by scheduling a day of community service.

Under 281--Iowa Administrative Code 12.1(8) a day of school is defined as a day during which the district is in session and the students are "under the guidance and instruction of instructional professional staff." A day during which the students are present and under the guidance and instruction of instructional staff is considered a day of attendance. 281--Iowa Administrative Code 12.1(10). A day of community service can be considered a day of school under the rules as long as the community service is aligned to the curriculum and students are under the guidance and supervision of instructional professional staff. Scheduling a community service day may also be a unique way to incorporate Career Education into the curriculum. Not only is this good for the students, it's good for the environment and the community too. Go green!
