Center on Instruction

Common Core Implementation Video Series for Mathematics - To aid states as they implement the Common Core State Standards (Standards)in Mathematics, the Hunt Institute and the Council of Chief State School Officers have commissioned a series of 17 videos explaining the Standards in Mathematics in far greater depth.

The Common Core in Mathematics: Overview - John B. King, Jr., New York State Commissioner of Education, introduces instructional strategies for successfully implementing the Common Core State Standards in Math. David Coleman, Contributing Author, Common Core State Standards, parallels the three main goals of the Common Core with successful international models and frames the six "shifts" in instruction in mathematics to be examined more thoroughly in following segments.

Common Core Resources - A collection of resources from Common Core State Standards Initiative.

Common Core State Standards: Implementation Tools and Resources - The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) developed this list of tools and resources to point states to promising practices and tools to support Common Core State Standards implementation. The document primarily lists resources developed by CCSSO and the lead writers of the standards and is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all resources available.

Connections to Assessment

Draft Math Progressions - The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. As they are being fine-tuned, they will be posted on this website.

This site features classroom examples of innovative teaching methods and insights into student learning, tools for mathematics instruction that teachers can use immediately, and video tours of the ideas and materials on the site.

  • Mathematical Practice Standards - Inside Mathematics illuminates the mathematical practice standards with video excerpts of mathematics lessons. Just as with content standards, not every lesson reflects all elements of the individual standards for mathematical practice.
  • Public Lessons - These "public lessons" (a term from Lesson Study practices) have been developed by the Noyce Foundation and are taught by practicing teachers and professional developers. These lessons have been extensively field-tested in multiple settings and refined over time, and are generally presented to an audience of participating students and observing teachers. Most draw on learning tasks developed by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS).

Iowa Core Mathematics Content and Practice Shifts - Grades K-5 - This document highlights shifts in the K-5 school curriculum resulting from adoption of Iowa Core Mathematics by presenting the shifts in contrast to typical practice often observed in elementary mathematics classrooms in the United States. The magnitude of the identified shifts may vary depending on a district’s past enacted curriculum and classroom practice.
