Achieve the Core - Resources, updates and other CCSS implementation tools.

Bringing the Common Core to Life - Ten video segments of David Colemen talking about the rationale for the structure of the common core curriculum - segment three gives his introduction to the math content standards and segment eight gives the rationale.

Center on Instruction

The Common Core in Mathematics: Overview - John B. King, Jr., New York State Commissioner of Education, introduces instructional strategies for successfully implementing the Common Core State Standards in Math. David Coleman, Contributing Author, Common Core State Standards, parallels the three main goals of the Common Core with successful international models and frames the six "shifts" in instruction in mathematics to be examined more thoroughly in following segments.

Common Core Resources - A collection of resources from Common Core State Standards Initiative.

Draft Math Progressions - The Common Core State Standards in mathematics were built on progressions: narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by research on children's cognitive development and by the logical structure of mathematics. As they are being fine-tuned, they will be posted on this website.

Illustrative Mathematics
A website sharing carefully vetted resources for teachers and teacher leaders to give children an understanding of mathematics and skill in using it. Provides expert guidance to states, districts, curriculum writers, and assessment writers working to improve mathematics education.

Inside Mathematics - A professional resource for educators passionate about improving students' mathematics learning and performance. This site features classroom examples of innovative teaching methods and insights into student learning, tools for mathematics instruction that teachers can use immediately, and video tours of the ideas and materials on the site.

  • Mathematical Practice Standards - Inside Mathematics illuminates the mathematical practice standards with video excerpts of mathematics lessons. Just as with content standards, not every lesson reflects all elements of the individual standards for mathematical practice.
  • Public Lessons - These "public lessons" (a term from Lesson Study practices) have been developed by the Noyce Foundation and are taught by practicing teachers and professional developers. These lessons have been extensively field-tested in multiple settings and refined over time, and are generally presented to an audience of participating students and observing teachers. Most draw on learning tasks developed by the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service (MARS).

Investigating the Iowa Core Standards for Principals - Users must establish an account to access materials. Once an account has been established, click on the following links: Exploring the Iowa Core>Investigating the Iowa Core>Investigating the Iowa Core Leadership Resources>Investigating The Iowa Core Standards for Principals.

Key Instruction Shifts of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics - Provides content emphasis by cluster for each grade level.  For each grade level clusters are broken down by major clusters, supporting clusters and additional clusters.

Leadership and Learning Center Webinars - The Leadership and Learning website provides links to several webinars - downloads of audio, video, and handouts. Topics include John Hattie's research on what works best in classrooms and how you can be sure that what you are doing will have the greatest impact on student learning; Doug Reeves on both the latest research and observations about how teachers and administrators can make the most effective use of student data; and  how to implement the Common Core standards effectively.

The Mathematics Common Core Toolbox - A resource site designed to support districts and schools working to meet the challenge and the opportunity of the CCSS. Find tools and instructional materials to help better understand and to implement the CCSS in Mathematics.

The site is broken into the following three sections:

  • Standards for Mathematical Practice - This section features Key Visualizations (animations) and Formative Assessment tools and tasks.
  • Standards for Mathematical Content - This secton features Key Visualizations (animations) that support the CCSS content standards.
  • Resources for Implementation - This section features Preparation for Implementation, Studying the Standards, and Sample Scope and Sequence.

NCTM: Math Common Core Coalition - This site includes material or links to information and resources that the organizations of the coalition are providing to the public and the education community about the CCSSM.

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium

Symbaloo - Websites and resources devoted to the Common Core.

Teaching Channel Video: Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Tools for the Common Core Standards - Tools developed to support implementation of the Common Core State Standards.

Understanding Formative Assessment & Why it Needs to Be a Priority for Every School - Learn how formative assessment has been proven to improve teacher effectiveness and student learning—and what this can mean for your school. Dylan Wiliam provides inservice on the need for formative assessment.

Unpacking the Standards in Math - These documents support teachers in their understanding of the common core and essential standards. The unpacking documents demonstrate at a granular level the knowledge and skills students are expected to master at a particular grade.
