State Wide Literacy Team

Co Leads:

Rhonda Ketels, Consultant for the Iowa Department of Education
Sandra Nelson, Consultant for the Iowa Department of Education

Mission Statement

To support districts with the necessary resources to improve the universal tier of literacy instruction in Iowa's K-12 classrooms to ensure that all students learn at high levels to meet and exceed the Iowa Core standards.

The spring planning of the SWLT also led to two essential questions that will be considered as we meet and work throughout 2014-15. The work of the SWLT during 2014-15 will be to examine and become involved in the work of C4K, learn about and understand the state guidance for Early Literacy, and to explore and learn about the resources available to assist in doing the work. The members of the SWLT will become the experts in assisting schools/districts throughout Iowa as we stive to increase reading achievement for all students.

Essential Questions

1. What does quality universal literacy instruction look like in a classroom?
2. How can we strengthen our knowledge base of effective literacy practices in order to support our collaborative work?
