Who owns the assistive technology purchased for an individual student?

Answer:

If the school district purchased the device, it is the property of the school district. If the assistive technology was purchased using the student's Medicaid or private insurance funds, the device belongs to the student. If the device was donated to the district, ownership would be by the district. If the device was donated to the student or his/her family, ownership would be by the student or his/her family.  If the parents or third party pays for a portion of a device, and the school pays a portion of a device, the school district will own the device to the extent of its cost. It is advisable that a written agreement be prepared between the school and the parents clarifying ownership.
