What may be done with leftovers?
Food purchased with FFVP funds should be used in the FFVP so the first priority for leftovers is to re-utilize in the FFVP. However, if leftovers cannot be easily used in the FFVP, they may be used in other child nutrition programs. Accurate planning will help minimize leftovers and manage food waste – forecast the amount of food that you will need.
Discard any leftover snack portions that were distributed to students and all leftover cut produce, such as veggie sticks, sliced apples, or melon. Wash all leftover, unpackaged, whole produce, such as apples or pears, if serving it again.
FNS Child Nutrition Programs may donate food to any food banks or charitable organizations that are considered tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Always follow State and local food safety regulations related to food donation.
