Is a school district responsible for retaining, repairing, or replacing assistive technology devices?

Answer:

If purchased or secured by the school district, then the school district should retain, repair, or replace assistive technology devices, as long as the students require them in order to receive FAPE. It is suggested that school administrators examine all warranties and contracts that may accompany specific devices. Additionally, if the student's family has provided an assistive technology device that the IEP Team has identified as necessary for the provision of FAPE and has included in the IEP, then the school district, with the agreement of the family, may use the device at school and is responsible to repair or replace the device if necessary.  The school district assumes ownership of the device to the extent of the cost to repair or replace the devices.
