Our Local Wellness Policy is stricter than the Healthy Kids Act nutritional content standards. Is this acceptable?

Answer:

Yes. Schools are encouraged not to change their wellness policies if they are stricter than the HKA. Schools are also encouraged to go above and beyond the HKA by adopting the HKA nutritional content standards for all foods and beverages sold and provided to students on school grounds. Regardless of the time of day and/or by establishing stricter standards for during the school day. Doing so will ensure clear, consistent messaging is used to teach students about healthy lifestyles.
