Healthy Kids Act

Our Local Wellness Policy is stricter than the Healthy Kids Act nutritional content standards. Is this acceptable?

Yes. Schools are encouraged not to change their wellness policies if they are stricter than the HKA. Schools are also encouraged to go above and beyond the HKA by adopting the HKA nutritional content standards for all foods and beverages sold and provided to students on school grounds.

What is the timeline for the Healthy Kids Act?

In December 2008, the State Board of Education took the first step toward adoption of two sets of rules. The rules in chapter 58 set nutrition content standards; the rules in chapter 12 discuss the CPR and physical activity requirements.
