This is a waiting list for the Differentiating Language Arts Standards for the K-12 Advanced Learner event being held on June 23, 2014. Filling out this form does NOT register you for the event, but only places you on the waiting list. You will be contacted prior to the event if an opening occurs.

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m.

Date: June 23 and June 24 are identical agendas.  A participant is permitted to sign up for one day only. 

Capacity: Only 100 participants will be registered per day.  Consider attending with a reading teacher or gifted teacher from your school district.  Please notify MaLinda Hugh-Reynolds at  if you register and then cannot attend. 

Waiting List: A waiting list will be compiled for participants who wish to attend after the first 100 participants are registered.  Please be considerate so another Iowa educator can attend in your absence.

Cost: No cost to participants for the day.  Lunch is provided.  This event is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Education in partnership with the Iowa Talented and Gifted Association.

Credit Option:  No credit will be offered because seat time does not meet time required for credit option. 

Presenter: Dr. Joyce VanTassel-Baska

Description:  This professional development day is designed to provide an understanding of the Common Core Language Arts standards and provide practical application for Multi Tiered System of Supports levels Tier 2 and Tier 3 for advanced learners.  The professional development day will introduce and provide instructional strategies for Iowa teachers of gifted education and Iowa reading teachers to 1) explain the details of the Common Core State Standards for Language Arts, 2) detail the developmental stages and challenges inherent to instructing advanced learners and 3) provide concepts, lessons, and strategies for providing quality language arts instruction for advanced learners.  Reading teachers and teachers of gifted programming will be provided a copy of A Teacher's Guide to Using the Common core State Standards for English Language Arts with Gifted and Advanced Learners (2014), which is written with specific instructional and management strategies.  Each participant will receive a book to use at the conference and to use at their local school district to develop and implement language arts standards in support of Iowa's multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).

Dr. Joyce VanTassel-Baska, is the editor and author of "Using the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts With Gifted and Advanced Learners" (2013) and  "A Teacher's Guide to Using the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts With Gifted and Advanced Learners" (2014) both co-published in collaboration with the National Association for Gifted Children.  Dr. VanTassel-Baska initiated and directed the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University and is the Smith Emerita at The College of William and Mary, Center for Gifted Education.  She has published 27 books and more that 500 refereed journal articles in the area of talent development processes and effective curricular interventions for gifted students.
