Since the adoption of Iowa’s mathematics standards in November 2010, thousands of Iowa educators have been engaged in learning about the Content Standards and Mathematical Practices. To launch our year of studying and implementing educator actions that are essential for a high-quality mathematics education to bring Iowa Core Mathematics Content Standards and Mathematical Practices in classrooms to fruition and increase student achievement, the Iowa Department of Education is sponsoring elementary (K-5) institutes educators to engage in using Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematics Success for all: 8 Effective Teaching Strategies for mathematics and to explore resources and instructional practices that support the standards. This promises to be a great opportunity for educators from across the state to join in a day of learning with national and state leaders in mathematics education. Participation in this event assumes knowledge of the Content Standards and the Mathematical Practices shifts of the standards; districts needing this overview of the standards prior to the summer mathematics institute should contact their AEA mathematics consultants. This is ongoing and continuous learning throughout the 2017-18 school year. Additional supports throughout the year for continued learning will be offered and supported through the Iowa Department of Education using technology with virtual and real-time supports.
