Parents: What will your child be expected to learn this year?

Friday, July 28, 2017

With the new school year right around the corner, parents have an opportunity to learn what their children will be expected to learn thanks to updated parent guides.

The parent guides are designed to let parents know what their children should know at each grade level as outlined by Iowa's academic standards, known as the Iowa Core. The guides focus on math, literacy, science, social studies and 21st century skills.

Guides include a brief overview of what will be learned in each subject area of the Iowa Core, examples of what students' work at school may look like, and examples of how parents can help at home. Parent guides are available in both English and Spanish.

Social studies is the latest of the state academic standards to be updated, joining literacy and science, as part of an ongoing statewide review process that includes broad public input. In May, the State Board of Education adopted new social studies standards following an Iowa-led writing and review process.
