Survey: Is your school ready for the future?

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

We’re excited to announce we will be conducting a survey starting this Friday, April 26, to gauge the readiness of Iowa’s education system for its future.

The survey is aimed at the entire education system, from elementary schools to districts to Area Education Agencies to the Iowa Department of Education.

Participating in the survey is important because it will help identify the first group of schools that will have access to Iowa’s statewide Response to Intervention data system, assessments, training, support and coaching in the area of early literacy. Results from the survey will also be made available to schools, districts, and AEAs for their own planning purposes.

The survey is being conducted by the Collaboration For Iowa’s Kids, also known as C4K, which is a partnership between the Department, AEAs, and local school districts.

C4K is focusing resources on early literacy and closing the achievement gaps with the goal that every child is proficient in reading by the end of third grade. The C4K selected this priority focus because of the integral role literacy proficiency plays for success in all other academic and social areas.

To attain this goal, C4K studied high-performing systems around the world. The group also reviewed the state’s performance – its strengths and challenges – and determined what has been shown to work. The group identified four common themes that, when focused upon, result in higher performance and greater success for students:

  • Standards and Curriculum
  • Educator Quality
  • Response to Intervention
  • School Improvement

The four themes were turned into work teams, which were commissioned by C4K to identify/develop evidence-based frameworks, practices, strategies, programs and supports.

On Wednesday, April 24, we will talk about Response to Intervention, best known as RtI.

Please mark on your calendar to take the survey, which will be open from Friday, April 26, to May 3.
