Schools encouraged to participate in “Purple Up” day

Monday, April 6, 2015

Gov. Terry Branstad has proclaimed April 15 as “Purple Up” day, in which Iowans are encouraged to wear purple in a show of support for military children.

The day of observance is in conjunction with the month of April being the Month of the Military Child.

Children of military members lead lives that are quite different from their classroom peers, and yet often go unnoticed. Stress is widespread, from having a parent deployed to frequently moving to new schools. To that end, the average military child attends six to nine school systems from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The goal of “Purple Up” is to publicly recognize the sacrifices that are thrust upon the military children.
