Advisory: Statewide special education conference kicks off Monday

More than 1,200 Iowans who are committed to making dramatic improvements for students with disabilities will join forces at a two-day special education conference hosted by the Iowa Department of Education beginning Monday, June 11, in Des Moines.

Iowa ranks near the bottom of the pack nationally for a gap in achievement between students with and without disabilities. This is despite research that shows the vast majority of students with disabilities can achieve at the same level as their non-disabled peers.

The conference is an opportunity to learn about efforts statewide to eliminate the achievement gap, to hear about evidence-based practices in special education and to network with special education teachers, parents, students, researchers and policymakers. Iowans who can’t attend the conference can watch the first day live online:

What: Pursuing the Promise, a two-day special education conference hosted by the Iowa Department of Education
When: Monday and Tuesday, June 11-12, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day
Where: Hy-Vee Hall, downtown Des Moines

Media members, here are some suggestions:

  • There will be strong visuals during the 8:30 a.m. Monday performance of the New Vision Dancers, a troupe for children with disabilities.
  • Keynote speaker Scott McConnell, professor of educational psychology at the University of Minnesota, will deliver remarks at 9:15 a.m. Monday. Dr. McConnell’s address will focus on ensuring that students with disabilities come to school prepared to learn.
  • At 2:45 p.m. Monday, college student Tyler Greene will discuss how his experience in Iowa public schools taught him to be an advocate for himself and prepared him for success in higher education. (Watch Tyler’s video at
