What are "basic skills?"
"Basic skills" means the core areas of instruction including communication skills such as reading, writing, language and mathematics. For purposes of the Early Intervention Program "basic skills" are usually taught by a regular certified elementary teacher. Class sizes outside a regular classroom such as music or physical education may be included when a district is developing its class size management strategy but funds from this program may not be used to hire additional teachers in these areas.
