May a student be denied an opportunity to make up work missed due to absences?

Because the primary purpose of an attendance policy is educational and not disciplinary, it is not reasonable and is contrary to the best interests of education to deny work to a student. However, after a reasonable number of unexcused absences (no fewer than 5 or 6), a student may be dropped from a class or given no credit. If a district has the resources to do so, it should provide for alternative activities, such as tutoring services. Iowa Department of Education Attendance Policy Guidelines of April. 1997.
