If the student or the parent or guardian of a minor student choses an open board meeting, the media may report on all evidence that the board heard, as well as the board's decision. If the student's family has asked for a closed board meeting, the only public aspect is the board's vote whether to expel, which must be done in open session (after the evidence was heard by the board in closed session).
[The board's recorded decision typically does not identify the student by name, or may mention the student's name but states that the board voted to follow -- or not to follow -- the administration's recommendation regarding the student.] Iowa Code section 21.5(1)(e).
