Each time the federal accounting handbook is updated, the Iowa accounting handbook will be updated to match in all respects possible. Districts and AEAs will follow the updated Iowa Uniform Financial Accounting handbook chart of accounts on the date specified by the Iowa Department of Education. With each update to the accounting handbook, districts will be notified of the effective date. However, new coding is updated each year, for example for new categorical funding, and those become effective upon release. Iowa School Districts and AEAs are required to follow the Iowa Uniform Financial Accounting handbook rather than the federal accounting handbook.
