Learning Supports Workshop
This training event will expand your knowledge and expertise in creating supportive environments in which students thrive.
The following invited workshop strands are offered to support the work of Iowa’s professionals in developing a positive social culture within our schools and community.
Strands for March 6th Day 1
Strand 1: Challenging Behavior - This session will consist of an overview of the Challenging Behavior Specialist Project, its impact, and presentations of the work of the AEA Teams. Presenters: Sephanie Peterson, Ph.D, BCBA Professor, Western Michigan University. Intended Audience: Challenging Behavior Specialist Teams and agencies interested in creating similar teams to address challenging behaviors in their settings. This is a two day workshop. Poster Session from 4:30 to 5:30 pm
Strand 2: Disproportionality in Special Education- This workshop will discuss school-related factors that contribute to discipline disparity and disproportionality in special education identification. The focus will be on integrating this information into teacher preparation programs. Attendees will also participate in the development of recommendations for pre-service training for institutions of higher education state-wide. Presenters: Dan Reschly, Ph.D., Professor of Education and Psychology, Peabody College Vanderbilt University. Intended Audience: Institutes of Higher Education
Strand 3: PBIS Tier 1 - PBIS Trainers, coaches, and school-based implementers will present topics on developing systems and practices, and using data at Tier 1. Learn how building a solid foundation for all students at Tier 1 leads to durable, sustainable PBIS implementation. Intended Audience: New implementers and those considering PBIS
Strand 4: PBIS Tier 2 - PBIS Trainers, coaches, and school-based implementers will present topics on developing Tier 2 systems and practices, including using data at this tier. Learn how to develop systems for some students and increase their success in school. Intended Audience: Schools developing Tier 2 systems or provided Tier 2 interventions.
Strand 5: PBIS Tier 3 - PBIS Trainers, coaches, and school-based implementers will present topics on developing Tier 3 systems and practices for the few students needing intensive, individualized supports, including wraparound services. Behavior management and developing intervention plans will also be addressed. Intended Audience: Schools beginning to develop their Tier 3 systems.
Strand 6: Bullying Investigations: Tips and Techniques - (Morning session) Best practices for conducting building level investigations at your school. Presenter: Amanda Easton, District Investigator, Des Moines Public Schools. Intended Audience: School staff in a building or district directly responsible for conducting intake and investigation of bullying reports.

Strand 6: Olweus Connecting. Empowering. Achieving. "A look at Social Emotional Learning and Classroom Meetings" - Presenter: Matt Gress, STARS of Nashville. Intended Audience: Participants from schools and AEAs who are implementing class meetings or advisories or wanting to faciltate them well. This workshop will focus on High School Implementation. This workshop will be repeated in the afternoon. Attendees for this strand will switch and attend Strand 7 in the afternoon, and need only register for Strand 6.
Strand 7: Olweus Provocative Victims: What do we Know? What can we do? Presenter: Marlene Snyder, Ph.D., Intended Audience: Educators and AEAs who recognize the struggles around bullying prevention and intervention and how to address the issues faced for students who fit in the "provocative victim" description. This session will be repeated in the afternoon. Attendees for this strand should attend Strand 6 in the afternoon and need only to register for Strand 7.
