The Iowa Department of Education’s Bureau of Nutrition and Health Services received a Wellmark Foundation grant titled Building on the Healthy Kids Act Opportunity. This grant will allow the Department of Education to support schools with the implementation of the Healthy Kids Act nutrition content standards at the local level; guide schools in reexamining their school district wellness policy; and engage parents and the greater school community in recognizing the impact they have as role models. Healthier CACFP Award and Menu Toolkit
The Healthier Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Award is a recognition system that supports the wellness efforts of child care centers and homes participating in CACFP. Child care centers and homes taking steps to improve the nutrition, physical activity, nutrition education and/or environment for children in their care can apply to win an award in one or more of these categories. Three award levels are offered: Honors, High Honors and Highest Honors
Applicants can choose which category(ies) they would like to apply for and at which level, and then submit the application to their Bureau Consultant (Centers) or Home Sponsor (Home Providers). Applications must include submission of the requested support documentation as listed in the “Evaluation” columns in the application.
Winners are recognized with awards issued jointly by the USDA, Food and Nutrition Service, and the Iowa Department of Education that showcase the child care center/home achievement in the community. Awards may include banners, certificates, or letters to parents that can be posted to announce the high wellness priority of the center/home.

Healthier CACFP Mini-Grant
Team Nutrition is offering $500 mini-grants to assist CACFP Centers with any changes that may be needed to meet the Healthier CACFP Award criteria.
If you are striving towards the Healthier CACFP Award you are eligible to apply.
Here are some ideas:
• Taste testing of healthy foods (fruit, vegetables, whole-grains, low-fat/fat-free dairy) that you like to incorporate in your menu.
• Staff time to coordinate and plan wellness activities after hours or attending trainings.
• Classroom gardening activities (seed necklace supplies, seed sorting activities, books, etc.).
• Food service equipment to prepare and serve the food samples or support family style meals (must not exceed 10% of total grant).
• Wellness related posters, pamphlets, and activity sheets.
HealthierUS School Challenge
The Healthier US School Challenge provides National level recognition from USDA for schools reaching the Gold, Silver, Bronze or Gold with Distinction level. The 4 year award recognizes efforts undertaken by schools to provide a healthier school nutrition, physical activity and nutrition education environment.
