A new school safety guide was put in place earlier this year to assist schools in establishing plans and procedures to make their facilities, students and staff safer.  Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division (HSEMD) put in place this guide, which covers a variety of emergencies, including how to respond to an intruder with a gun who enters a school intending to do harm.

Gov. Branstad announces Iowa school districts receive Teacher Incentive Funding

Gov. Terry E. Branstad announced today that the Central Decatur Community School District and the Saydel Community School District won a grant in partnership with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) from the U. S. Department of Education’s 2012 Teacher Incentive Fund.

 

Governor’s Bullying Prevention Summit

In a show of unity, determination and support, nearly 1,200 Iowans came together for the Governor’s Bullying Prevention Summit in Des Moines on Nov 27. The goal: Stand up to bullying.

The summit featured a number of speakers from Iowa communities, as well as state and national experts who presented strategies about how to combat bullying.

“Bullying is not exclusive to schools – it can be at malls, places of worship,” Sioux City Superintendent Paul Gausman (pictured here), a featured speaker, told the audience. “At some point in your life, you have been bullied. Other times perhaps a bystander. And if you’re totally honest, you may even admit that at one point in your life, you were a bully yourself.”

 

Advisory: Meeting Notice for Task Force on Teacher Leadership and Compensation

Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass today announced a meeting of the Task Force on Teacher Leadership and Compensation on Friday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 

More Iowa students participate in Advanced Placement courses

The number of Iowa public high school students who are getting a taste of college-level studies through participation in Advanced Placement courses continues to climb, according to a report released today by the College Board.
