Advisory: Meeting Notice for Task Force on Early Childhood Assessment

Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass today announced a meeting of the Task Force on Early Childhood Assessment on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The meeting will take place at the West Des Moines Learning Resource Center, 3550 Mills Civic Parkway, in West Des Moines.

A legislative proposal from the Branstad-Reynolds administration focuses on strengthening the teaching profession for the benefit of students and educators. The proposal will be largely based on recommendations from the Task Force on Teacher Leadership and Compensation. In this video, three task force members talk about how a system of differentiated teacher leadership roles and compensation has the power to position Iowa’s school system to be among the best in the world.

 

More Iowa schools and districts miss NCLB targets

More Iowa schools and districts missed Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) state targets for test participation and proficiency in reading and mathematics in the 2011-12 school year, according to the 2012 State Report Card for No Child Left Behind released today by the Iowa Department of Education. The number of schools and districts identified as “in need of assistance” based on performance in the 2011-12 school year also climbed.

 

Advisory: Iowa students will tap their ‘Super Powers’ on Wednesday

About 200 middle school students and teachers from across the state will learn how eating right and staying active bring out the super powers inside them at the annual Super Power Summit on Wednesday at the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust St., in Des Moines. The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., provides wellness information that students and teachers can take back to their own schools.

 

Teaching Ambassador Fellowship applications are open

The U.S. Department of Education is seeking outstanding teachers for the highly selective Teaching Ambassador Fellowship program. The one-year appointments begin in August. Applications are due no later than Jan. 29.

The Iowa Department of Education will request a waiver for the approval of an amendment to Iowa’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grants Application to extend the waiver previously granted under section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA), 20 U.S.C. § 1225(b), to extend the period of availability of the fiscal year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds awarded under Section 1003(g) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended, until September 30, 2014.
