Iowa’s vocabulary results on NAEP test are released

Iowa’s student results on the vocabulary portion of the National Assessment of Educational Progress declined significantly from 2009 to 2011 at the fourth-grade level and were stagnant at the eighth-grade level, according to NAEP results released today.

 

Governor’s Bullying Prevention Summit

In a show of unity, determination and support, nearly 1,200 Iowans came together for the Governor’s Bullying Prevention Summit in Des Moines on Nov 27. The goal: Stand up to bullying.

The summit featured a number of speakers from Iowa communities, as well as state and national experts who presented strategies about how to combat bullying.

“Bullying is not exclusive to schools – it can be at malls, places of worship,” Sioux City Superintendent Paul Gausman (pictured here), a featured speaker, told the audience. “At some point in your life, you have been bullied. Other times perhaps a bystander. And if you’re totally honest, you may even admit that at one point in your life, you were a bully yourself.”

The Iowa Department of Education will request a waiver for the approval of an amendment to Iowa’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grants Application to extend the waiver previously granted under section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA), 20 U.S.C. § 1225(b), to extend the period of availability of the fiscal year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds awarded under Section 1003(g) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended, until September 30, 2014.
